The Salvation Army Central Virginia Inclement Weather Shelter Opens November 15
Daily, overnight shelter will provide two meals and a cot for 100 individuals
RICHMOND, VA (Nov. 13, 2024) Starting Friday, November 15, The Salvation Army Central Virginia, in partnership with the City of Richmond, will open its Inclement Weather Shelter located at 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue in the Third District, for adults 18 years and older. The City partnership is part of a multipurpose emergency shelter for the unhoused, where The Salvation Army Central Virginia offers year round, comprehensive emergency shelter services.
The Inclement Weather Shelter will open nightly from November 15, 2024 to April 15, 2025. Space is available on a first come first served basis for 60 men and 40 women. The shelter opens daily at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. the following morning, and the overnight stay includes two meals, a cot and restroom access. Persistent extreme cold or other extreme weather might extend these operating hours. The men’s entrance is located at the back of the building, which faces Sledd Street and the U.S. Post Office, and the women’s entrance is located in the side alley of the building.

In addition to the Inclement Weather Shelter, 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue also houses The Salvation Army Central Virginia’s second emergency shelter for 50 men and the recently opened Community Resource and Training Center (CRTC), both in partnership with the City of Richmond. The CRTC is the first of its kind in the Commonwealth, providing wrap-around services, mental-health resources and access to community partners. At the October 15 ribbon cutting, Richmond Mayor Stoney said the CRTC has been three years in the making and the benefit to having homeless services onsite at the shelter allows individuals in search of housing relief to have face-to-face services and direct access to help.
Another community resource is the Homeless Connection Line (HCL) managed by Homeward, which offers trained Diversion Specialists who can assist households within three days of losing their housing to problem-solve, access community resources and connect to homeless assistance if needed. The Homeless Connection Line is 804.972.0813.
The Salvation Army stands as a beacon of hope in the community, bridging the gap for people experiencing unexpected financial hardship. “Thanks to the partnership with the City of Richmond and its partners, individuals experiencing housing insecurity can not only receive short-term help with a hot meal and overnight relief from the cold, but also utilize the onsite CRTC services to activate resources and support for long-term solutions,” said Area Commander Major Samuel Kim.
