Julie's Journey: From Mom to Ministry
It’s always a win when we see kids bring their families to church. When they go home so excited about what they’ve learned that a parent or grandparent just has to come see for themselves—that’s impact in action.
This is Julie’s story.
Julie first connected with The Salvation Army Central Virginia Corps/church through her sons. Looking for a safe place for them after school, she found our youth programs. Her boys came home excited—talking about band, youth group and vacation bible school (VBS). Their enthusiasm was contagious, and soon, Julie decided to see for herself what had them so energized.
What she found was joy.
She was drawn in by the warmth of the kids, the welcoming community, and the pure excitement they had about coming to church. It wasn’t long before she began volunteering in our children’s ministry. From nursery to music classes, Julie became a faithful part of the team, ready to help wherever needed.
But her journey didn’t stop there.
As she immersed herself in serving, she also found comfort and restoration in the Corps/church adult programs—Women’s Bible Study, Fun Bunch and more. Through these connections, she built lasting friendships and a deep sense of belonging.
Julie shares, “What I like about church is that I have faith and Jesus now—I have a place where I belong.” She continues, “I love to volunteer and help. It makes me feel like I’m doing something good, and I feel like they are my family.”
And when asked about her favorite part of volunteering? “The youth. I love all the hugs I get—it melts my heart.”
Julie’s story is a testament to the power of a child’s faith. It’s about God’s love overflowing from one generation to the next, about breaking cycles and building legacies. It’s a story of healing, hope, and transformation right here in our Richmond community.
This is why we do what we do.
