Curley's Story
Curley's life is a moving testament to resilience, faith, and love. Growing up in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood, he drew strength from a deep connection with God. His mantra, “Be blessed. Don’t be stressed. Just confess. Let God handle the rest,” has guided him through life’s trials.
As a child, Curley flourished at the formerly named Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, a haven where he learned, grew and created lasting memories. However, adulthood brought challenges, including 20 years spent in and out of prison. During this time, Curley rediscovered his faith and rebuilt his self-worth, realizing, “Without God, I can’t do anything.”
Upon his release, Curley left old habits behind and embraced a new chapter in life, guided by his faith. His journey led to the role he cherishes most: father. He is a proud parent to his son Corinthian, born in 2018, and his daughter Carnation, born in 2020.
Parenthood, however, brought its own challenges. In April 2024, Curley lost his mother, a devastating blow that also led to the loss of their family home. Shortly after, the children’s mother left, leaving Curley to face single parenthood and the looming threat of homelessness. By July 2024, they had been evicted, spending a month in a hotel—an unsustainable solution. Curley needed a fresh start.
That opportunity came at The Salvation Army Central Area Command Family Shelter. During their stay, Curley regained stability, learned essential skills with the help of his caseworker Sarah, and began building a better future. “She’s outstanding, outspoken, intelligent, communicative. She’s a blessing,” Curley shares with gratitude.
Despite the hardships, Curley remains focused on providing for his children. When they questioned their circumstances, he responded with honesty: “Daddy didn’t pay the bills and this is what happened, but I’m going to make it right.” This promise fuels his determination every day.
Now working part-time and dreaming of a career in real estate or construction, Curley finds joy in simple moments with his children. Their happiness inspires him to keep striving. With unwavering faith and love, Curley continues to overcome life’s challenges, offering a powerful example of hope and perseverance to others.
